Mission and Vision

Our Vision is to make a difference in the lives of expecting mothers.

Our Mission is to provide expecting mothers in low-income communities with the prenatal services necessary to optimize the health of the mother and baby throughout their pregnancy. In addition, our mission includes empowering our clients by providing them with prenatal and maternal education.

Needs Assessment

Why did we decide to serve this population?

  • Latina women experience the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Orange County (OC Social Services Agency, 2021).

  • Evidence shows that 21 births per 1,000 Latina women occur in those 15 to 19 years old (KidsData, 2016).  In addition, these young mothers and their children are more vulnerable to complications. Compared to mothers in their 20s or 30s, teen mothers are more likely to have premature births, infants with low  birthweight, and babies who die in infancy.

  • While initiating prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy is considered the standard of care for women in the US, nearly 30% of U.S. Latinas begin care after the first trimester and obtain less than the recommended number of visits (Derige, 2018).

  • Many Latina women face specific barriers to accessing healthcare. Some have intermittent health insurance coverage or limited experience with healthcare in the United States. Other barriers to health care access include lack of childcare, lack of transportation language barriers, inability to conduct timely pregnancy testing, work constraints, and health literacy (Derige, 2018).
Nutritional Coaching and Guidance
Risk for Nutritional Deficits
  • Adolescent latina pregnant women are at a greater risk for nutritional deficits, stress, and depression than their adult counterparts (Singh et al., 2017).

Blood Glucose and Insulin Education
GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus)
  • Lower socioeconomic status (SES) and less nutritional education materials may lead Latinx individuals to consume more calorie-dense foods that contribute to a higher BMI (body mass index) (Carolan-Olah et al., 2017).
  • A higher BMI with increased GWG (gestational weight gain) is a risk factor for GDM among Latinx (Moore Simas et al., 2019).
Blood Pressure Monitoring
Hypertension
  • GWG is associated with an increased incidence of maternal complications such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (McDowell et al., 2018).
  • Noted improvements in GWG for certain high risk groups, such as African American, Hispanic, or adolescent women when they attended prenatal care (McDowell et al., 2018).
